Saturday 4th August - Oban - Birds, Bru, Beer, Bed & Breakfasts & Buskers

Saturday 4th August

Cloudy, warm with the odd sunny spell

Oban - Bummers, Birds, Beer & Buskers

In the morning, before we went to sort out our car parking issues, we went for a morning coffee down to the little Patisserie that we could see from our bedroom window - home made scones and so on - very nice:

Bummers
This morning we went out on the "Hunt a Car Park" game in Oban. This has been a continuing bug-bear in Oban. There are only two places in Oban where you can park for more than two hours at a time - we are looking for whole day parking. When you go there, they are inevitably full, unless you are lucky. So you have to go back to the two hour parks and keep putting money in, or go to a supermarket where you can park for three hours free so long as you use the supermarket. Then you have to move and can't go back until two hours are up! The attendants are vigilant - we met one!

Birds
On the hunt for a park we met some Jackdaws feeding on a little Rowan Tree

Bru
Later, when we went to the supermarket we came across this stuff, prevalent in Glasgow as well - it looks like Agent Orange. Has anyone tried it and liked it. I took a mouthful and couldn't manage anymore:

Beer
I did buy some of this because of its name. Much better

Bed & Breakfast
In the afternoon, while Mary-Ann went shopping, I went down the Corran Esplanade to find the GlenBurnie Bed & Breakfast. My cousin Graham Strachan at Maraetai had met the owner of this place, Graeme Strachan, and assured me that he was a great contact for things to do in Oban. Unfortunately he was away on holiday, but I took a picture of the place anyway - the one on the right:

I had to walk back down the Esplanade passed the harbour:

... and a Tall Ship:

... to the place where my coffee was waiting

Buskers
While sitting out there I heard this fiddler - he didn't look much, but he was very good. Alas I had no change to give him:

  1. Grew up on Irn Bru Ruary, absolutely love it. We can get it in New Zealand now, we were selling it at the Festival in February and people wanted to buy it by the bottle, we were selling it by the cup. It's the best thing ever for a hangover too, I've never used it for that but I've been told. It's great with a chip buttie as long as the chip buttie has HP sauce on it, Agnes

  2. Les drank Speckled Hen when he was in the UK over 10years ago & liked it too. What a pain about the parking.
