Thursday 26th July - Ettrick and Gair Tima

Thursday 26th July

A beautiful hot summer's day

The Gair Tima

This is one of the places that Laidlaws originated from. The building was built by the Duke Of Buccleugh in 1760. He owned large estates all round about, and still does. He had also built a twin to the Gair but further up, called .....

Laidlaws lived in Gair Tima as tenants until the Duke decided to sell it at some stage and he sold it to a Laidlaw - not sure who.

The genealogy shows Andrew and Agnes living (tenant farmers?) at Glenkerry up the valley from Gair towards Ettrick before 1760 and some children born there.

From 1760 on children are born at Gair Tima.

Here is the gate - guarded by two Alsatians

Just through the gate is a bridge that crosses The Tma

We met David Brockbank who owned the steading beside The Gair. He went over and arranged for us to go up to the house. Just then the owner's wife, Karla, arrived. She was very friendly and invited us into the house to have a look, although it is in the process of renovation - as you can see.

... and its fireplace

We were glad to have been allowed in.
